Feast of Saint Katharine Drexel

March 3, 2024

Dear Collaborators,

Lenten greetings to you.

Last month, DIA had our annual Board retreat in The Woodlands of Texas at the parish of St. Anthony of Padua.  We have this amazing parish to thank for nourishing the priestly vocation of our chaplain Fr. Paul Kostka.  It was here during a retreat in high school that Fr. Paul first heard God calling him to serve as a father for His flock.

One of the great joys of the past three years for me has been visiting Catholic schools and parishes across the country.  It has been very edifying to see our Faith expressed in diverse communities.  The time I spent at St. Anthony of Padua was no exception.

When I noted in the parish bulletin that there were nine Masses scheduled on Ash Wednesday, I knew that this would be an extraordinary experience.  The campus itself is impressive, and its Texas-size supports a community that would have such a slate of services to start Lent.  A relatively young parish founded in the late 90s, St. Anthony’s now serves over 7,500 families with a large church, a stunning day chapel, an adoration chapel, a robust pre-K through 8th grade school, and an impressive food pantry serving thousands each month.

As I listened to Fr. Kostka’s first Friday homily with a few hundred others attending that daily Mass, I wondered how many other priestly vocations will spring from this vibrant parish. Being a part of the community there for just a couple of days certainly had an impact on me.

May God bless you and your ministry in Catholic education in the remaining months of this school year.

Duc in Altum!

P.S., This semester, our annual DIA Fellowship began with a great cohort of Catholic educators from schools out West and in the Midwest.  These Fellows are embarking upon a unique experience as they work to strengthen the Catholic culture of their respective institutions.  We will have an opportunity to learn of the fruits of their work at the annual Summit next October 21 – 23 in Houston.  Please pray for the Fellows and their schools over the coming months.
